The Education Committee together
with TPWD is responsible for:
Developing educational programs on
the natural and cultural resources of Natural Area for the
visiting public.
Currently the committee has three ongoing programs:
1. Monthly programs featuring
a recognized expert in a particular field such as geology,
native plants or bats. These
programs generally include both an
instructive and a field component.
2. Monthly interpretive hike program (Explore the Canyon) lead
by trained interpretive guides who may or may not have a
technical background in the natural sciences but have
demonstrated sufficient knowledge and understanding of
this region to be able to enhance the the visiting public's
appreciation and understanding of the the Canyon.
3. Interpretive training program that models the
fundamentals of good interpretation practices as applied at the
Canyon.
In addition to the formal programs mentioned above, on a
strictly as available basis, some members of the committee act
as interpretive guides for private small group activities.
Membership on the Ed. Com involves a commitment to a monthly two
hour planning meeting in addition to providing support for the
programs the committee sponsors. That support typically
involves participating in the administrative aspects of one or
more event per month and requires upward of 5 hours per month.
A member should anticipate that activemembership on the
committee entails a commitment of at least 10 hours per month.
The Education Committee is a standing committee of Friends of
Government Canyon. The chair is appointed by and serves at
the pleasure of the Board of Friends of Government Canyon.
Anyone who is interested is welcome to attend meetings which are
currently being held on the second Sunday of the month from
9:30-11:30 a.m. at the office of FofGC at the Research Center
(Ranch House) at GCSNA.
