First Sunday each Month - Haiku Hike
Enjoy an experience that combines immersion in the natural world and creative writing. Led by local poet Mobi Warren, it includes an introduction to haiku and other short poem forms, a three-mile hike and quiet time sitting along the trail to write. Open to ages 14 and older; group size limited to six; wear sturdy shoes, bring at least a quart of water, a snack, a journal to write in, and a towel or pad to sit on. 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.; reservations recommended.

Join the Friends of Government Canyon and the Sierra Club for a jointly-led guided hike on one of the many trails at Government Canyon State Natural Area. Length of hike will range from 4 to 7 miles depending on the group. Dress appropriately and wear sturdy shoes for hiking over rough terrain; bring two liters of water and a snack.

Knowledgeable guides discuss the flora, fauna, natural and cultural history of this awesome natural area on this exploration. Length of walk and interpretive topic will vary, depending on the group. Dress appropriately, sunscreen and hat recommended, and wear sturdy footwear appropriate for rough trails; bring two liters of water and a snack.

February 8, 2012 – Resource Volunteer Workday:
Be a steward of a State Natural Area…we can’t do it without you! Assist Natural area Resource Specialists with various resource-related projects such as biological surveys, invasive species removal, trail/road maintenance, research projects, and more! These workdays will take place from 9am to noon the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. Join Resource Specialist Niki Lake on a kid-oriented 1 mile hike on the frontcountry trails of Government Canyon State Natural Area and participate in a unique natural and cultural resource scavenger hunt in the process! 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Open to children of all ages. Children must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. No pets. Meet at the rainwater harvesting tower at the GCSNA Visitor’s Center. Bring water. February 25, 2012 – Canyon Interpretive Run:
Join Resource Specialist Niki Lake and Elite Ultramarathoner Liza Howard on an approximately 12 mile interpretive run to the Protected Habitat area of Government Canyon SNA. The run will take place on rocky and uneven terrain with some elevation gain. There will be several interpretive stops at which we will talk about the flora, fauna, and natural and cultural history of GCSNA as well as running-related topics and invaluable advice from Liza. Participants must be able to run 12 miles at a slow/moderate pace. Running shoes are necessary. Open to ages 14 and older; minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian; no pets please. Sunday, February 26, 2012 — Hike to the Protected Habitat Area:                                                                                                                        Join members of the Government Canyon Trail Patrol and other volunteers who will lead this hike into the Protected Habitat Area. Participants must be at least 14 years of age and physically able to hike 12 to 13 miles over broken, rocky terrain with a good portion of elevation gain and loss. 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM; please arrive no later than 7:45am. Meet at the Visitors Center next to the rain harvesting tower. Dress in layers appropriate to the weather. Carry at least three liters of water per person, snacks, lunch, sunscreen, hat and raingear. Wear sturdy, well-broken-in hiking shoes or boots. 26 February, 2012 – Leap into Spring:
Hike with us in search of early bloomers and other signs of spring. 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM. Group size limited: ages 8 and up welcome. Parent or guardian supervision required for children 12 and under. No pets, please. All participants must be able to walk over rocky ground for short to moderate distances; sturdy shoes, hats, sunscreen, and at least 1 liter of water per person strongly recommended.

March 10, 2012 Springtime Birds in the Hill Country: 
Join us in the Exhibit Gallery from 6:30-8:30 PM for a fascinating discussion and video presentation by Malcolm Mark Swan on Springtime Birds in the Hill Country. Mr. Swan shoots high-definition video at high-shutter speeds (for blur-less movement and slow-motion), usually on a tripod. He has seen some 1,500 species in North America and 650 species in the US. Open to all ages; minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian; no pets please. Reservations requested, beginning at Noon on February 13 and ending at Noon March 9. March 31, 2012 – Geology of the Texas Hill Country:
Join the Friends of Government Canyon and geologist John Hoyt, Assistant General Manager for the Edwards Aquifer Authority, in an informative one-hour discussion about the geology of the Central Texas Hill Country as well as the recharge zone of the Edwards Aquifer, San Antonio’s main water supply. The discussion will include the function and location of various zones of the aquifer, rock formations and their characteristics. Recent effects of drought and information about programs designed to protect the aquifer will also be available. A two-hour “walk about” will follow the talk 9:00 AM – Noon. Bring at least 1 quart of water per person, wear appropriate hiking shoes and clothing and bring a snack. Participants must be 12 years or older; no pets please. April 6, 2012 — Full Moon Poetry Howl:
Release the poetic coyote inside your soul and come howl at the moon over the canyon! Join knowledgeable guides and poets on a fairly short hike and experience a full moon. Bring your own or favorite moon-themed poem to share! 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM. Group size limited; open to ages 14 and older; minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian; no pets please; Natural Area entry fees apply. Participants should be able to hike 3 miles (round trip) over rugged but beautiful trails with a fair amount of elevation gain. Dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes. Bring a flashlight, at least a quart of water, and a snack if you like. Meet at the Visitor Center by the Rainwater Harvesting Tower.
